Raiders outlast Falcons 49-46 to claim first varsity victory - Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010
The Raiders thrilled a hometown crowd with a 49-46 victory Friday over North Forney. Interestingly enough, the difference in the high-scoring affair came down to a handful of big-time plays by the Raiders defense and special teams.

August football two-a-day practices involve prodigious amounts of sweat and hard work. In the process, schools begin to assemble what they hope it will become a winning team, one that could possibly stretch the season deep into December. They commit plays to memory, refine techniques, study film and lift weights. And they choose their leaders. While its just a quick vote, fill out the ballot and turn it in, the choices that are made in that moment can significantly impact the outcome of a season. Its not a popularity contest; its a serious matter of selecting the teammates most suited to provide the right kind of leadership for a team.

The 2010 season begins a new era in Wylie football. After four years as a Class 5A school, including a trip to the 2008 state championship, the Pirates find themselves docked in an eight-team District 10-4A. Also, the men of AHMO no longer have the local football stage all to themselves. Instead, they find themselves sharing it with Wylie East. Both schools will play their home games at Wylie Stadium on the Wylie High School campus. The first official steps into the new season, which kicks off Aug. 27, will be taken Monday, as team around the state begin summer two-a-day practices. The first four days will be non-contact.

Joe Piercy remembers what it was like visiting his grandmother in Peoria, Ill. during baseball season Anytime I was there, if you touched her remote when the Cubs were playing, you would get smacked in the head, he said. Despite being a die-hard fan, Piercy said, the one thing she never did was see the Cubs play at Wrigley Field. On July 17, Piercy, the head coach of the Wylie Cubs T-Ball team, got to do just that.

The Wylie Flyers turned in an exceptional effort at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region 7 track and field meet held July 15-17 at Garland Williams Stadium. Wylie qualified 20 young athletes for the TAAF state meet that will be held Aug. 5-8 at the Baylor University Track Stadium in Waco.

The Pirates blew through Fridays pool play at the 13th annual FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship presented by Adidas and Academy Sports & Outdoor. The 64-team competition was held July 9-10 on the campus of Texas A&M University. Wylie, which finished unbeaten against pool foes, opened with a 35-21 win over Beaumont Westbrook and followed with a 43-20 victory over Grand Prairie. Those two wins secured the top seed in Pool H heading into Saturdays single-elimination bracket play. However, the Pirates didnt let up in game three, taking down Klein Collins 32-7. Wylie (3-0) and Westbrook (2-1) stepped into the championship bracket, while Grand Prairie (1-2) and Collins (0-3) fell into the consolation bracket. Pearland slipped past the Pirates 32-31 in Saturdays opener.

Therell be a new set of varsity field generals leading Wylie football in 2010. One, Jesse Brubaker, an incoming sophomore, will assume the reins at Wylie East for the Raiders first varsity season. Meanwhile, over at Wylie, incoming seniors Nico Ramirez and Joe Rivas will share quarterbacking duties for a Pirate team thats moving back down to Class 4A competition after four years at 5A.

ROCKWALL Wylie Easts final chance for a berth in the 7-on-7 state tournament ended Saturday during a qualifying tournament at Rockwall High School. For the most part, victories at such events have been few for the Raiders this spring and summer. However, getting wins was not priority No. 1 for a team that in a few months will begin its inaugural varsity season.

DALLAS It was a busy day Saturday and a good one as well for the Wylie. The Pirates hosted a 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament at SMU, which was conducted inside Gerald J. Ford Stadium and the adjacent practice fields. By the events end, both they and Mesquite were the last two teams standing, meaning each qualified for the July 9-10 state tournament in College Station.

Now, some WEHS parents are concerned their teams will be behind the eight ball competitionwise, especially when varsity play begins in 2010. Specifically, theyd like field turf to be laid on the football practice field and lights installed at the baseball and softball fields.

The Pirates escaped with a 30-25 win Friday over Plano East at Kimbrough Stadium.
PESH, which was coming off a bye week, faced a banged up Wylie team, and was able to match the Pirates almost score for score.
Pirates head coach Bill Howard said, "It was a good win. Plano East had their backs against the wall and they were going to do everything they could."

Offense, defense, special teams each contribute in 39-point victory!
The Pirates annihilated Mesquite Horn 60-21 Friday at Hanby Stadium.
The Jaguar defense struggled to slow Wylies well-executed offensive game plan.
However, it was the Pirates overwhelming defensive onslaught that stole the show, with six sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt being just part of Wylies effort.
Rowlett comes to Pirate Stadium on Friday for Wylie homecoming. The celebration begins with a pregame performance by That Wylie Band at 7:10 p.m. and the announcement of the band sweetheart and beau. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. The homecoming queen and king will be crowned at halftime.
