Pirates, Lady Pirates conclude spring campaign at regional competition in Waco

Members of the Wylie track and field teams competed in the 5A Region II championships held at Baylor University on April 25-26. However, none of them qualified for the state meet.

Girls’ track

The Lady Pirates qualified athletes in 10 events out of the District 9-5A meet. After Friday’s regional preliminaries, Wylie advanced competitors to the finals in three events.

Sophomore Grenisha Wright turned in outstanding performances, finishing sixth in the long jump (18-00.75) and fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Andi Love, another sophomore, placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and 15th in the shot put prelims (33-11).

Other regional qualifiers competing in field events were Samantha Cooper (15th, triple jump), LaPorsha Riley (17th, triple jump), Marie Carey (11th, pole vault) and Ashleigh Reinschmiedt (DNP, pole vault).

Claire Tafelski finished 12th in the 800-meter run (2:26.21).

Other runners competing in relay races at the regionals were Tiffany Riley, Ashley Urune and Michelle Nwachukwu.

Boys’ track

The Pirates had three of their 15 regional qualifiers advance to the regional finals.

Chris Givens finished seventh in the 100-meter dash.

Givens qualifying time in the preliminaries was 10.64, the third-best time on Friday.

Spencer Bullock placed eighth in the pole vault (13-6) and set a new school record in the process.

Chris Allen placed seventh in the long jump (21-11) and Jamal Peden placed eighth in the triple jump (45-05.75).

Jerod Monk competed in the shot put (48-6.25), while Dominque Rabun placed 17th in the long jump (20-9.5).

Chisom Akagha was 12th in the 110-meter hurdles (14.98) and Donald Macarthy placed 18th in the 300-meter hurdles (41.77).
