Raiders, Pirates battle each other, HP during tri-meet at East

Three solid wrestling programs clashed last Thursday at Wylie East, where the Raiders hosted a tri-meet with Wylie and Highland Park.
By event’s end, the latter had beaten Wylie 53-33 and Wylie East 41-33, while the Pirates defeated the Raiders 55-18.
All in all, it was excellent preparation for the Jan. 24 district meet at Lovejoy, where all three schools will compete. The Pirates finish out the regular season Thursday at home against McKinney North, while the Raiders will wrestle this weekend at the Frisco Heritage Tournament.
“We’ve made some good improvements, but we still have some ways to go,” said East head coach Tad Hazlewood. “Hopefully, this next weekend will give us a good tuneup for district.”
He added, “I’m pretty happy with these guys tonight. They came out fighting, and I’m pretty happy with their performance.”
The Pirate-Raider clash offered some evenly matched competition, as well as a few quick pins.
Things started off with East’s Mason Chadwick outlasting Brett Studley 5-2 at 132 pounds. Next up were Raiders’ Zeck Peltier and Wylie’s Antoine Austin at 138, with the former recording a pin in 1:38.
Wylie got its first win when Arman Mansauri pinned Andrew Savage in 1:35 at 145 pounds, which was followed by Wylie’s Manuel Calhoun pinning Luke Lindsey in 59 seconds at 152.
Following a forfeit to Wylie at 160 pounds, the Pirates maintained their winning streak, as Nation Gibrick pinned David Beddow in 1:44 at 170 pounds.
There were two forfeits to Wylie at 182 and 220, but then East’s Cody Cavasos got his team back on the board by pinning the Pirates’ Steven Sellars in 38 seconds.
The dual finished off with some exciting lighter-weight matches, starting at 106, where the Pirates’ Ryan Rigby nipped Aaron Gassett 12-10. Then, at 120 pounds, East’s Shane Brown concluded the competitive portion of the meet with a 12-9 victory over Wylie’s Rafael Lopez.
The Pirates also earned forfeit wins at 113 and 126 pounds.
“We wrestled OK,” said Wylie head coach Tracy Cleveland. “I have seen us wrestle a lot better than we wrestled tonight. We did not do as well as a I hoped against Highland Park, and we have a few things to improve. Luckily, we’ll get to see them again in a couple of weeks at district.”
The coach added, “I saw my young guys battle all the way to the end. We executed some moves that we work on in practice, and that’s always nice. We certainly need to work on winning the first battle, which, in wrestling, getting the first takedown. We didn’t accomplish that in some of the matches.”
