The Lady Pirates notched their second district win with a 62-48 victory last Friday at Denison. The triumph improved the Lady Pirates’ 13-4A record to 2-3 with two contests left in the district’s first half.
The first of those games took place Tuesday at home versus Lovejoy, with the second being Friday at Royse City. The district’s second half started Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Lovejoy.
Wylie’s latest win may be a sign the Lady Pirates are finally turning the corner following a non-district campaign during which they got only one win against a very formidable schedule that included a number of 5A schools. Such competition was great preparation for district competition.
Kennedi Foreman led Wylie with 25 points against Denison, with Kako Cox adding 12 and Brooklyn Moore complementing their efforts with 10.
The contest itself was over by halftime, which the Lady Pirates entered with a 42-26 lead.
The Pirates fell to 0-3 in District 13-4A with s 62-43 loss at Denison last Friday. A few days earlier, on New Year’s Eve, Wylie was impressive in a 56-40 home win over McKinney Boyd.
The Pirates led Denison 13-10 after one quarter, but trailed 19-10 at halftime. They made a third-quarter run, but were unable to catch the Yellowjackets.
It was a different story days earlier against the Broncos.
“We feel like we played well today, and that it’s a good start for (resuming district),” head coach David Black said after the game. “We gave up 27 offensive rebounds against Greenville (second district loss), and you don’t beat anybody giving up that many offensive rebounds. We did a little bit better today rebounding and taking care of the ball. If we cut the turnovers down a little bit, and block out a little bit, we can be competitive.”
He added, “We’ve got experienced players in Travonta Maddox and Myron Varmall … Those guys are All-District players. All they have to do is settle down and take care of the ball, make better decisions and we think we can play with anybody in our (district).”
The Pirates resumed action Tuesday at home against Sherman, will play Friday at Royse City, and then at Lovejoy on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
