Wylie’s Lady Pirates made it four regional titles in a row Saturday after besting the competition at the Region 6 meet at Wylie High School.
A total of 220 lifters and 47 teams competed at the meet.
In the process, they qualified seven lifters for the March 15-16 state meet in Corpus Christi. Wylie East also will be represented at that meet by Marissa Gentry-Yzaguirre, the first Lady Raider lifter to make the state competition.
Making state for the Lady Pirates were Katherine Otah, who was named the Best Overall Lifter at Saturday’s meet and was a regional champ too.
Two other regional champions, Cayliah Jackson and Katrena Njiki, also qualified for state, as did second-place finishers Serena Saldivar, Crystal Ogbuechi and Jasmine Williams.
Cheyenne Gehring was a regional medalist and a state qualifier.
Also competing for the Lady Pirates on Saturday were CeCe Duru and Chidi Chinaka (regional medalists) and Kailey Trice, Jariell Brown, Allee Dana, Melanie Valdez, Katelyn Watts, Kirsten Hammons and Anna Saldivar.
The Lady Raiders’ Marissa Gentry-Yzaguirre lifted a total of 760 pounds for a third-place finish. Teammate Summer Wilkerson was fifth in her class after lifting 660 total pounds.
Also competing for Wylie East was Cinthya Romero.
“You always hope to do better than you do,” Wylie East head coach John Mitchell said. “But overall the girls tried really hard … Overall, I was pleased with the way the season has gone. We achieved most of our goals we set out for the year. The girls worked really hard, and there is a lot of promise for the future.”
