Lt. Welch was interred with full military honors at D/FW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy. in Dallas at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.

Lt. Welch died April 3 of wounds he received when insurgents attacked his base in Khowst Province, Afghanistan.

He was an ordnance officer assigned to Company B, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke.

He was born Nov. 30, 1984.

Among his awards were the Army Achievement Medal, the Purple Heart, the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge, which were awarded posthumously.

Lt. Welch graduated from UT Arlington in 2008 with a degree in military science and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

He graduated from Wylie High School in 2003. While in high school, he played football, participated in Junior AFROTC and served as a leader in his church youth group. 

Lt. Welch met his wife Becky in Wylie; they have a 20-month-old son, Robert Welch IV, and custody of nephew, Aaden Vann, 3.

He is survived by his wife, Becky (Brill) Welch; son, Robert Welch IV; nephew, Aaden Vann; parents, Barbara and Robert Welch II; sister, Jane Welch; and grandmother, Margarete Westenburg.

A trust fund has been established for Lt. Welch’s sons, Robby and Aaden, to which donations may be made in lieu of flowers. Memorial contrbutions may be made payable to Becky Welch and mailed to Lori Legg, 111 Lee Court, Fort Knox, Ky. 40121.
