Funeral services for Laura Ethel Hicks Campbell, 100, of Wylie were held Nov. 29, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Wylie. Interment followed at Kreymer Cemetery.
Mrs. Campbell was born Feb. 26, 1910, east of Wylie to Ida Elizabeth Housewright and Alfred Monroe Hicks.
She met Ira Edgar Campbell in 1928. They were married at the age of 19 on Sept. 4, 1929, at the courthouse in Rockwall. They were married 66 years.
According to her family, Mrs. Campbell was active in First Baptist Church Wylie until her health declined. She taught Sunday school for many years and was involved in the Women’s Ministry and Happy Circle.
She spent most of life working on the farm with her parents and husband, and she also worked at Johnston’s Factory in Wylie. She loved the outdoors and would often be found in the garden or working in her flower beds.
“She was an exceptional mother and grandmother who always took the time to make each person feel special and loved,” her family said. “She welcomed everyone into her home and would make sure each visitor left with a full stomach and a happy heart.”
Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Edgar Campbell; her son, Jerry Monroe Campbell; her son-in-law, Billy Ray Mills; her mother, father, sister and brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Billie Ruth Mills of Wylie; daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann Campbell of Quitman; five grandchildren and their spouses, David and Pat Mills of Wylie, LaVona and Larry Martindale of Wylie, Nancy Mills Butler of Wylie, Michael Campbell of Quitman and Martye and Mark Miller of Caddo Mills; 14 great-grandchildren, Jessica and Kenny McKeever, Brittney Martindale, Joshua Butler, Rachel and Jordon Hebenstriet, Mandy Campbell, Brandon Martindale, Tara Campbell, Laci Butler, Lynsey Butler, Jacob Butler, Alicia Miller, Katie Miller, Tyler Mills and Daniel Miller; two great-great-grandsons, Jason Hebenstriet and Landon McKeever; also many nieces, nephews and “an array of precious friends,” her family said.
Arrangements were under the direction of Allen Funeral Home of Wylie.
