Funeral services for Anna Carylene Geren McClendon, 99, of Lavon were held Oct. 6, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Lavon. Interment followed in the Thompson Cemetery in Copeville.
The Rev. Clint Bratcher officiated.
Mrs. McClendon was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Lavon to the late Zona and Frank Geren. She married David Carter McClendon June 14, 1935, in Sherman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Zona Geren; sister, Irene Watkins; brother, Malcolm Geren; husband, Carter McClendon; daughter-in-law, Mary Nell McClendon; and many friends and former students.
Survivors include her son, Ronnie McClendon of Lavon; grandson, Dr. Cole McClendon and his wife Terry of Wylie; and two great-grandsons, Colby McClendon and Carter McClendon of Wylie.
“Ms. Carylene,” as she was known to her students, began her teaching career in 1932, teaching first grade in Lavon. She taught first and fourth grades for many years and served as an elementary principal. Ms. Carylene was also selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher in 1974 in recognition of her contributions to education and service to the community, her family members said. Carylene McClendon Elementary School in the Community ISD is named for her.
Mrs. McClendon was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lavon, where she served as organist, Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. Her family said she loved “traveling, working in her yard and quilting with her close friends.”
