DALLAS — The Pirates began the 2014 preseason with high expectations. After their performance Friday evening at Jesuit, there is no reason for them to lower them.

Over the course of nearly three hours, Wylie produced a number of big plays offensively and defensively against a solid Ranger club — they beat them 24-14 in the live portion — something that foreshadows well as they head into this Friday’s cross-district clash with Sachse.

“All in all, we had a real good night,” head coach Bill Howard said. “We started the night not real crisp on offense, but we started to pick it up. We have long ways to go and a lot of work to do. Sachse will be ready for us and they are a real good team.”

He added, “We’ve had a pretty good camp, but we’ve got a long ways to go. Right now, we have to focus on doing the little things and get better every day … We want to be playing in November and December, and these games right now are about getting better, not so much about wins and losses.”

The Pirates open the season against Sachse for the fifth straight year. Wylie won the first meeting, but the Mustangs have captured the last three, including a high-scoring affair in 2013 at Wylie Stadium. That is where the two teams will tangle this Friday, and where Wylie will attempt to end Sachse’s winning streak.

A year ago, the Mustangs finished 11-1, which included going 10-0 in the regular season. This season, they are replacing several key players on offense and defense.

However, despite that, Howard anticipates they’ll still provide formidable competition.

“It’ll be a barnburner,” Howard said. “They’ll bring a bunch of people and we’ll have a bunch of people. They’re picked second in their district, and it’ll be a fun night.”
