June is a time to get ready for summer and all that accompanies it.

The month is also one for prognostication, especially when it comes to what might happen on the gridiron a few months hence.

The Texas high school football scene is not immune. Recently the 2014 edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football came out with its previews and predictions regarding what it thinks will happen throughout the Lone Star State.

Locally, Wylie, which advanced to the Div. I regional finals last season, is projected to finish first in District 10-5A and will be a Div. I playoff team along with projected second-place finisher McKinney North.

Wylie East, which came within an eyelash of making the postseason a year ago, is predicted to take fourth behind Lovejoy, with both those teams going into the Div. II bracket.

However, none of the four is projected to make the Region II finals. In Div. II, the periodical predicts Longview to defeat John Tyler in the regional title game, with Aledo (Region I) beating Cedar Park (Region IV) in the state title game.

In Div. I, it’s Ennis over South Oak Cliff in the Region II championship, with the former falling to A&M Consolidated (Region III) in the state title game.

Within the district, Pirates’ linebacker Jacob Hunt is the preseason Defensive MVP, with McKinney North running back Ronald Jones being the preseason Offensive MVP.  Jones (2,409 yards rushing and 39 touchdowns) is the top returning rusher in the division, while Wylie’s Carsen Cook (22 touchdowns and 2,467 yards passing) is the top returning quarterback.

Wylie East’s Jared Wyatt, who came on as the 2013 season progressed, returns as a top receiver (942 yards and 12 scores).

Plano East

The Panthers have their third coach in three seasons, PESH graduate Joey McCullough, and the former East player has begun installing his system and staff.

However, the folks at DCTF don’t believe it will be enough this season, as it projects the Panthers to finish seventh in the nine-team 6-6A.

The four playoff teams are projected to be Allen, Hebron, McKinney Boyd and Plano, in that order.

Once again, Allen (Region I) is projected to win the state title, this time defeating Galena North Shore (Region IV) in the Div. I title game. Katy (Region III) is projected to win the Div. II crown by beating Cedar Hill (Region I).

One piece of good news for East is that sophomore linebacker Anthony Hines is the preseason Defensive MVP. A year ago, as a freshman, Hines recorded 121 tackles, including 29 for losses, and had 11 sacks.

Sachse

A year ago, the Mustangs captured their first district title while going 10-0 in the process. Another district crown, the magazine notes, might be seized should Sachse replace top players like Kent Myers and James Mayden with athletes who can combine with returning starters Devine Ozigbo (802 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns) and Devin Duvernay (738 yards receiving, 221 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns).

At the moment, DCTF says Sachse will finish second behind Rockwall, with Garland and Tyler Lee rounding out the four playoff teams. Sachse and Garland would be the two Div. I representatives.

The preseason Offensive MVP is Rockwall running back Chris Warren, while the preseason Defensive MVP is Rowlett defensive end Charles Omenihu.
