Those wishing to look back at “the way we were” in Wylie can now do so online, thanks to a digitizing of back issues of The Wylie News by the University of North Texas. With the exception of ’90s issues, which will be funded later, the archives are posted on UNT’s Portal to Texas History website.

Rachel Orozco, Smith head librarian, applied for and received $24,999 in grant funding for the project. Yellowing back issues of the paper were boxed by Orozco and other library staff members, and sent, along with back issues of sister publication The Sachse News and The Sachse Sentinel, to the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City, Okla., where the pages were microfilmed.

Then UNT staff and students digitized and posted the issues on the website. UNT also provided additional funding to complete the process.

There’s a link on the library’s website, wylietexas.gov/departments/library, (click Online Resources and scroll down to Wylie News Online) as well as wylienews.com.

Once on the Portal to Texas History site, type The Wylie News in the search bar at the upper right side of the page. On the next screen, click Smith Public Library under Partner in the upper left side. From there, click on Advanced Search, upper right, and a screen will appear with places to type in words, phrases, date ranges, etc. At the bottom of the Advanced Search page, be sure to select Rita and Truett Smith Public Library under Partner and Wylie-Sachse Newspaper Collection under Collection.

For more local news, pick up a copy of this week's Wylie News or access the e-edition via this web site:
