MCKINNEY — Wylie East will be sending both its cross country teams to this weekend’s regional meet in Grand Prairie.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders earned that privilege by finishing second and third, respectively, at the Oct. 24 District 13-4A meet at Myers Park in McKinney. A pair of East runners, Grant Buley and Sarah Scott, each took first in their respective races. The latter ran after finally recovering from an injury that kept her out of some previous competitions.
Lovejoy won the boys’ meet with 34 points, ahead of Wylie East (43) and third-place finisher McKinney North (72). Royse City (122) and Wylie (137) rounded out the top five. McKinney North (33) captured the girls’ crown, finished just ahead of Lovejoy (35), with the Lady Raiders (102) coming in next ahead of Royse City (116) and Denison (131), Sherman (172), Wylie (172) and Greenville (212).
“I think we did well,” said Wylie East head coach Joel Zuniga. “I think the kids ran about how we thought they would run. I thought that Grant and Sarah - there was a lot pressure on them to win like they have in the past – and they both they answered the bell, showed up and had great runs today.”
Buley, a senior, ran a (16:19.00), which was eight seconds better than second-place finisher Grant Ballard of Lovejoy (16:27.00). Buley’s teammate Edwin Walker, a junior, was third (16:36.00), with the Raider junior Jorge Perez taking sixth (17:02.00) and junior Nije’E Cooper finishing 11th (17:28.00).
A year ago, Buley took first at the district meet, with Walker finishing second.
The first Wylie runner to cross the finish line was freshman TJ Vansaders, who took 19th with a time of 17:58. Sophomore Ryan Rigby was 27th (18:18.00) and freshman Nick Nouguez 28th (18:37.00).
Scott, a senior, finished well ahead of the pack, taking first with in 19:29.00. She was second during the 2012 district meet.
“She showed how tough she was today, and hopefully we’ll get her back and get her some more practice this week and have a good (race) at regionals,” Zuniga said.
The next closest finisher was Lovejoy’s Abby Tedford (19:52.00). The next Lady Raider to finish was freshman Theresa Simmons (17th at 22:04.00) with Gemma Warren taking 19th in 22:23.00.
Senior Bethany Burrows led the Lady Pirates, taking 27th in 22:55.00, with junior Mariah Lennon coming in 31st in 23:11.00. Sophomore Maggie Snopnik was 35th in 23:30.00.
Notes: Scott and Buley advanced to the 2012 state meet with fourth- and seventh-place finishes at the regional meet. At state, Scott finished 15th, with Buley taking 40th.
