Masons honor veterinarian as community builder

Members of East Fork Masonic Lodge #650 honored Dr. Charles “Chuck” Kerin, owner of the Parker Road Veterinary Hospital, with the Community Builder Award, the highest honor bestowed on a non-Mason.

The award was presented July 5 at the lodge, and Kerin, along with his wife Lisa and mom Kathleen Kerin, were on hand.

Worshipful Master Jeff Forrester told those gathered that the award is presented to members of the community who have distinguished themselves through service to their community, to the local, state or national government, to their church or
synagogue, or to humanity.

Reading from the Kerin’s nomination, submitted by Past Master Cliff Martin, Forrester said Kerin’s grandfather, Richard A. Minter, was the 1950 Commander of the Dallas Commandery No. 6, Knights Templar. He said Kerin had been positively influenced by his grandfather, with whom Kerin spent many of his formative years.

Kerin had said that his grandfather was “a man of great integrity and accomplishment,” who had started out as a “high-school drop-out with a shovel in his hand” and ended up as an executive at Lone Star Gas as a professional engineer. “I will never be able to fill his shoes but had the privilege to see them worn,” Kerin had said.

Forrester reviewed Kerin’s background for the group. While a member of Boy Scout Troop 727 in Richardson, Kerin earned the rank of Eagle Scout in just three years when he was only 14 years old.

In band, he was first chair for the coronet/trumpet from sixth grade through his senior year of high school; during high school, he frequently played “Taps” at military graveside services.

He graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University, where he had been a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta honor societies. He was an officer in the student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In more recent years, in the Wylie area, Kerin served the local Rotary Club in several offices including president. During his presidency, he oversaw the building and placing of kiosks for school crossing guards and raised funds for wheelchairs and water purification systems for undeveloped areas.

Kerin delivers Meals on Wheels and piloted and provided private plane transportation for a Border Collie rescue group, delivering adopted dogs to their new homes all over the country.

He has served on the Citizens Bond Advisory Committee and the Wylie Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and currently sits on the city of Wylie Animal Control Board of Directors and the board for In-Sync Exotics. He has been the veterinarian on site for the Wylie Chamber of Commerce rodeo each year and has aided in the arena preparation.

His volunteer work includes veterinary services at the South Dallas projects. “This special Equine program provides underprivileged kids an opportunity to learn responsibility by caring for horses,” Martin said.

Kerin and his staff have been voted Best Veterinary Clinic in Wylie by The Wylie News’ readers, and he volunteers to speak about animal care and veterinary medicine at many local group meetings.

“Dr. Chuck Kerin has been making our community a better place to live since moving here in 1984,” Martin said in his letter. “It is with honor and pride that I nominate Dr. Charles ‘Chuck’ Kerin to receive the Community Builder Award for 2011.”

Kerin said he was appreciative and honored to receive the award. “My grandfather was a Mason,” he said. “He was as close as you can get to someone who can walk on water.”

He said he had been blessed with great parenting and grandparenting, which had fostered in him a sense of the importance of giving back rather than entitlement.

Kerin has been a vet for 27 years. His clinic is located at 707 Parker Rd.

The Wylie area has been very good to him and his family, Kerin said. “I believe it’s our responsibility to give back. I enjoy doing things for the city.

“The way I try to live my life is I believe we reap what we sow. If you sow good seeds, you get good crops; if you sow bad seeds, you get bad crops,” he said. “This is a wonderful harvest for the work I’ve done, and I’m so very appreciative.”
