Wylie native turns love of cars into national magazine exposure
Date: Wednesday, January 26, 2011

When Blake Foster, ’04 graduate of WHS, was a little boy, he loved cars and read every issue of Honda Tuning Magazine. His mom Sharon Fogg said he had, “aspirations of one day being featured there.” Whether or not all of Foster’s dreams come true, that one certainly did.
Foster and his car, a 1993 Honda Civic Ex Coupe, are featured in the February issue of the magazine, bringing national attention to the young man and his high-performance wheels.
According to his mom, Foster went all 12 years in Wylie schools, starting at Hartman Elementary and going on to schools named, at that time, Wylie Intermediate, Wylie Junior High, and finally WHS. “Blake decided he wanted a Honda Civic his junior year of high school,” Fogg said. “He shopped online, found a car. We went to the man’s house and found a perfect-condition Honda Civic for Blake to drive to and from school and work. I was happy, because it was such a calm, nice, dependable vehicle,” she said.
The “calm, nice, dependable vehicle” soon began to undergo a transformation. “Blake started work on his Honda during high school, spending countless hours and his own hard-earned money to afford the special parts, tires, etc., he wanted to create his prize car.”
She said his friends “gave him a hard time” about the amount of money he spent – herself included – but soon it became clear the car and its driver were headed for great things.
“He began the process to tear down the Honda Civic to create a show and race car,” Fogg said. “Many hours were spent in the garage scraping, tearing down to ‘bare bones,’ welding, painting, creating a work of perfection.”
Fogg said her son’s “quest for perfection and talents shine through in the car he has transformed.”
“It doesn’t take a car enthusiast to know and realize the hard work and exceptional quality of his car work,” she said.
He acquired some of those skills after high school graduation when he worked for Roy’s Auto in Plano, expanding what his mom called his “already self-taught knowledge of cars.” He also pursued a career in welding and graduated in the top of his class at ATI career training center.
Those who are “car enthusiasts” will understand the modifications Foster made to the Civic: they include Tein springs, a set of clear corners, and a B16A2 engine, one that required “shaving” the engine bay to make it fit.
Eventually, that engine wasn’t sufficient, and he kept part of it and paired it with a swapped-in B18c1 block. He added CTR pistons and a full valve train, eventually rebalancing, polishing and tweaking, adding new parts and trying new things continuously.
“The modifications were made to make [it] more of a race/street car, such as engine rebuild and more horsepower parts,” he said. “My goal is to fully turn it into a race car for track only and begin racing more.”
He entered his first race in spring of 2008; even though he had, he said, no idea what to expect, he won first place in the Street Modified class.
He’s continued to compete in Sports Car Club of America events, winning such awards as Best JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) and Best Engine Bay. In all, Foster has won eight SCCA races for his class.
Foster said he hopes to keep his name in the public and “hopefully someday get some sponsorships.”
He lives in Tulsa, Okla., now, and said he thinks this story in the car magazine is a goal he’s proud to have reached.
“You can get what you want sometimes, when you try hard.”
Copies of Honda Tuning Magazine can be found at Barnes & Noble and Auto Zone, or visit the site hondatuningmagazine.com, click on Features and then “Honda Civic Ex Coupe – Tripe Threat” to read Foster’s story.
