Light reflecting off every surface. The air filled with new hopes and the faint scent of textbooks. The hustle of new students. The bustle of faculty. The scene opens at the Collin Higher Education Center.

The Collin Higher Education Center – a university center featuring junior- and senior-level classes and post graduate programs –  offers students the opportunity to earn a baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degree from five different universities all without the hassle of commuting outside of McKinney.

“Eighty percent of our students work,” Collin College President Dr. Cary Israel said. “This offers access close to home.”

The center is located on the northeast corner of U.S. 75 and the Sam Rayburn Tollway (Hwy. 121) and is the first brand-new Collin College facility to open in 15 years. Universities offering degrees in connection with the center are Dallas Baptist University, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas Woman’s University, The University of Texas at Dallas and The University of North Texas.

The concept of a higher education center is a fairly new one, and only about 20 universities throughout the nation house such programs, Israel said.

In addition to the course variety of a university, the center offers a wide variety of rooms designed to enhance the educational experience.

A Learning Resource Center or “quiet room” where students can gather in groups to work on projects, study and do homework is housed on the ground floor along with a student lounge where students can gather between classes.

Several video conferencing classrooms are offered on the second floor where students can interact with a teacher from an off-site university.

Each university also has representatives on hand in the Student Services Center to answer student questions.

“They have direct access to representatives,” said Marcy Cadena-Smith, Collin assistant director for college and public relations.

According to Israel, the most difficult part of opening the center was getting the universities to work together. “It’s amazing that we all agree on something,” he said.

Collin officials and the college’s board of trustees worked on keeping exclusivity for each participating university. For example, only UT Dallas offers an Master of Business Administration program, while Texas A&M University – Commerce offers a Master of Science and Education in Counseling.

“This was a great collaborative effort,” Israel said. “It speaks well that we have established working together.”

For this semester the Higher Education Center has about 450 students enrolled, which, according to Israel, is more than the college was aiming for.

The opening of the center not only offers new opportunities in education but also is an advantage to the surrounding area, Israel said. “This is a wonderful community asset,” he said.

The center offers meeting room for rent by businesses and nonprofit organizations and a board room which can accommodate 350 people.

The center does not have a cafeteria or a book store because “they didn’t want to compete against the private sector,” Israel said.

“We want our students to utilize local businesses,” he said.

The center was built on a prime site with a $1.8 million gift of land from the McKinney Economic Development Corporation  and a $2 million gift for the parking lot. Construction of the 125,000- square-foot facility costs $30 million.

There is not a charge for parking, and tuition is based on the tuition of the degree-granting university.

“We can only hope this collaboration will have a ripple effect throughout the area,” Israel said. “We want our students to be globally competitive and the classes to be affordable.”

The Collin College Board of Directors will be meeting within the next month  to discuss the school’s three- and five-year strategic plans, but at least one goal has been realized. Collin College students can now walk across the stage to receive their four-year degrees.
