Nick Knott runs away from the Plano West Wolves defense much as the Pirates ran away with the game Friday night.
The Pirates unleashed an unbridled attack that came from every direction to shock Plano West 50-21 Friday night at Clark Stadium.
Tailbacks Nick Knott and Bennie Jones combined for 220 yards rushing which was supplemented by a solid passing game. The performance was further enhanced by big plays on defense and special teams that repeatedly forced the opponent into mistakes and provided opportunities.
It was a tremendous show of character and heart on the part of the Pirates who entered the game winless through five district contests. Clearly, the Wolves were unprepared for the intense and defined effort put forth by the Pirates.
Wylie took the initial lead on a West mishap. After a stout Pirates defense forced the Wolves into a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession, tackle Devan Drake blocked the punt, which was scooped up and returned to the Wolves 1-yard line by Sean Watts. Quarterback Noah Cheshier punched it in two plays later.
The teams traded leads through the first half that ended 21-all. The standout play of the half was a 99-yard kickoff return by Knott. The tailback took the ball near the goal line, broke to the right through traffic and into the clear.
Wylie also scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Cheshier to Aaron Morris.
The Pirates got right back to work in the second half in which they scored 29 unanswered points.
On the second play of their opening possession, Knott scored on a 62-yard run.
Cheshier connected with Colby Harper in the back of the end zone on their next series, which included a 2-point conversion to go up 36-21.
The rout was on near the end of the third quarter, when the West quarterback’s pass was tipped into the hands of defensive back Armando Cervera who returned it 27 yards for the touchdown.
To add insult to the situation, the Wolves muffed the ensuing kickoff, and the ball was recovered by Knott at the West 20. Four plays later, Cheshier hit Harper with a dart for the final touchdown to settle the final score 50-21.
